Recovering from a Hacker

You can’t currently use certain internal links on my blog successfully, because of a hacker.  Any blog using a non-current version of WordPress software is vulnerable to this hacker.  See http://wordpress.org/support/topic/307660?replies=1 for more info.

There should be a special place in hell reserved for computer hackers…

Update: This now appears to be fixed — a mere 8 hours later!  (I did take a couple of fairly long breaks.)

  1. Weird my blog went down earlier today in a manner of speaking… looks like the same error… you could read it but not click on it… seems as though the permalinks were changed to some strange configuration. Only took a few minutes to fix is this what happened to you?

    • Harrison, you may have a hidden Admin as part of your user base. On the dashboard, check Users / Authors & Users, and compare the number of Admins listed at the top with the number of Admins in your list of users. They should be the same, but there maybe one more in the total at the top than in the list.

http://wordpress.org/support/topic/307518?replies=162 has extensive information on the problem. Briefly, you need to click on a valid user, then doctor the profile URL by increasing the User ID # by one until you find the hidden profile URL. The hidden user will be an Admin — you need to change his status to User, then back out to the Authors & Users page and delete the user.

    • Wow there is a 2 there even though when I click it only shows one! Man that is crazy. I remember seeing a registration the day before now. Great post thanks for the reply!
